The minimum age to rent a car in Dubai is 21 for most cars, rising to 25 for luxury, sports and exotic models. You also usually need to have held your driving licence for at least a year. So while you can legally hold a UAE licence from 17, renting is a separate matter — rental companies set their own, higher limits. Here is exactly how the age rules work by car type, and what they mean if you are a younger driver.
Rental age limits scale with the value and power of the car:
| Car type |
Minimum age |
| Economy & standard cars (sedans, small SUVs) |
21 |
| Larger SUVs & vans |
21 |
| Luxury cars (Mercedes, BMW, Range Rover) |
25 |
| Sports & exotic cars |
25 |
A few suppliers allow 20-year-olds on the smallest economy cars, but 21 is the standard floor across Dubai. For high-value and high-performance cars, 25 is common because insurers price young drivers as higher risk.
Bikes and larger vehicles follow their own limits. Motorcycle rentals typically start at 21 as well, while higher-powered superbikes, vans and minibuses may require more experience or a specific licence class. As with cars, the supplier states the exact age and licence requirement on each listing.
Age is only half of it. Most rental companies in Dubai also require your driving licence to have been held for at least one year — proof of experience, not just eligibility. A brand-new licence usually will not be accepted, and provisional or temporary licences are not accepted at all. If you converted a foreign licence to a UAE one, the clock is generally based on when your UAE licence was issued. Our guide on how long after getting your licence you can rent covers this in detail.
If you are between 21 and 24 you can rent, but expect a few extra conditions:
None of this stops you renting an economy or mid-range car. It just narrows the options and may cost a little more.
If you are 21 to 24 and want the widest choice at the best price:
These steps will not unlock an exotic car at 22, but they make renting a sensible everyday car straightforward.
Meeting the age limit is step one; you also need the right paperwork:
The age and licence rules apply to additional drivers too — anyone else who will drive must meet the same minimum age and be added to the rental agreement.
The licensing age in the UAE was lowered to 17 under the 2025 federal traffic law, so the rental minimum is clearly stricter than the law itself requires. That gap is about insurance: rental cars are covered by commercial policies that price risk by age and experience, and younger drivers statistically carry higher accident risk. The 21 and 25 thresholds are how suppliers and insurers manage that, rather than an arbitrary rule.
